Fire destroys rural home

John Oxford

COLQUITT COUNTY — A house on John Vickers Road was destroyed by a fire Tuesday morning. No one was at the house, and no one was injured.

Firefighters from the Ellenton, Norman Park, Culbertson and Lenox volunteer fire departments were called to 1466 John Vickers Road at 9:12 a.m. Monday. When they arrived, Ellenton Fire Chief Darrell Passmore said, the back of the house was fully involved in flames, which had begun to spread into the attic area.

The fire was contained to the back of the house, a recent addition. Although the flames left the front intact, Passmore said there was smoke and water damage throughout the house.

“We’ve done good to stop it where we did,” Passmore said. The house was, however, declared a total loss from the overall damage caused by the fire.

The house was owned by Victor and Sandy Martin, but Passmore said they were not at home when the fire began. The fire ignited in the back of the house, but what caused it could not be determined.

The Red Cross of Colquitt County was on the scene to provide assistance to the family, but they would be staying with other family members.
