In celebration of ‘Teacher Appreciation Week,’ on May 5, the R.D. Smith ‘Just Bring It’ afterschool students did a short essay to their favorite teacher. Each participant’s name was submitted in a drawing. Amy Putnam, a 6th grade teacher at Willie J. Williams, won a gift certificate to Cato’s. Her name was selected by Michael Goss Florence, right. The students also participated in a ‘I Love You, Mom’ contest in honor of Mother’s Day. Vontrell McNeil, top, was the winner. He was given a Belk’s gift card and a poem titled ‘A Mother’s Love’ to present to his mom. The 5th Annual Awards Ceremony was held on Friday, May 22. O’derian Edwards brought the welcome to the 50 attendees; Demartell Turner read a poem titled ‘Friends’; Leah Reynolds, the center’s aide did the presentation of awards; and Darlene Reynolds gave an inspirational speech encouraging the children to continue to do their best and challenging them to read this summer. O’derian Edwards won the Academic Award; Florence received the Excellence Award and the Outstanding Student Award; and the Most Improved Student Award went to Javarius McIntyre.
