Preliminary report says fire was accidental

MOULTRIE — A fire that destroyed a house on Bob Taylor Road Saturday night appears to have been started accidentally.

Colquitt County Sheriff’s Investigator Rod Howell said a preliminary investigation found the fire did not appear to be intentionally set. An investigator with the State of Georgia Fire Commissioner’s Office will further inspect the damage today.

The house, owned by Lamar and Gloria Corbin, not Carlton as was reported Tuesday, was totally destroyed by the fire. Members of the Bay, Hamilton and Funston Volunteer Fire Departments were called to 1753 Bob Taylor Road about 10:30 p.m. Saturday. When firefighters arrived, there were flames shooting out of the roof, and it was declared a total loss.

According to documentation, the house had recently been foreclosed upon and was scheduled to go up for auction in February. Arrangements had been made on the house, however, and an advertisement announcing the auction was pulled from The Observer after running once in the Jan. 9 edition.

The law firm of Martin and Brunaves in Atlanta was handling the debt collection on the house, but they could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

A benefit for Corbin, a former pastor of Norman Grove Baptist Church, will be held at the church at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25.
