MOULTRIE — A Colquitt County man lay beneath his overturned four-wheeler almost 24 hours before a neighbor found him and summoned help Wednesday.

James Green, who is described as being in his late 50s, was listed in critical condition Thursday afternoon at the James M. Still Burn Center in Augusta, a hospital spokesperson said.

Green was riding a four-wheeler ATV down the railroad tracks just off of Sumner Road Tuesday to check a spill well pond, according to Northside Volunteer Fire Department Chief Glenn Garner. As he tried to turn around near the tracks, the four-wheeler apparently flipped over and onto him, Garner said. Green and the four-wheeler then fell down a nearby 30-foot embankment, landing with the four-wheeler still on top of him.

Green was not found until about 6 p.m. Wednesday by a neighbor who looked for him after Green’s wife heard him screaming, Garner said. When volunteer firefighters arrived at the scene, Colquitt County Emergency Medical Service personnel were already on scene and were giving IVs to Green for dehydration.

Garner said the Moultrie Fire Department’s rescue truck was called to the scene, and rescuers used a Stokes basket and rope to pull Green up the embankment. He was then put onto a neighbor’s Gator ATV and taken to an ambulance that was waiting about 200 yards away on Sumner Road.

While trying to help rescue Green, Garner said a volunteer firefighter, Camden Woodleaf, twisted his knee and was taken to Colquitt Regional. A hospital spokesperson said he was treated for the injury and released Wednesday.
