Victim air-lifted after wall falls, trapping him

Staff Reports

MOULTRIE — A 29-year-old man who was injured when a roof collapsed on him Saturday was identified as Bryant Odom, 29, of 1488 Doerun-Funston Road. He was pulled from the rubble after the roof collapsed on him about noon Saturday. He was not taken to Colquitt Regional Medical Center, however, but was air-lifted to an undisclosed hospital after being taken to the Moultrie Municipal Airport.

A Colquitt County sheriff’s deputy was called to the house at 12:06 p.m. Saturday after Colquitt County E-911 received a cell phone call by Odom. He stated he was trapped under a roof that had caved in on him while he was at the house. He was there trying to recover items following a Feb. 22 fire that left the mobile home a total loss.

The deputy located Odom at the back of the house seeing his legs sticking out from the rubble. A beam was pressing on his back, and the deputy reported his condition and requested assistance. Members of the Colquitt County Volunteer Fire Department and Moultrie Fire Department came to the scene and were able to free Odom.

Firefighters from the Doerun, Funston and Bay Volunteer Fire Departments were called to 1488 Funston-Doerun Road at 11:25 p.m. Feb. 22. When they arrived, firefighters found a double-wide mobile home in flames but Odom and his family were able to escape without injury.

Volunteer firefighters remained at the scene for about three hours to ensure the flames were completely extinguished. The mobile home was considered a total loss, but an investigation could not determine what caused the fire to ignite.
