Burglars strike at scene of shooting

Staff Reports

MOULTRIE — A woman who was the alleged victim in a foiled kidnapping attempt Monday reported her house and car were burglarized Wednesday morning. The house was the scene of a shooting allegedly related to the kidnapping attempt.

Casandra Byrd, of Joe Louis Avenue, reported a thief kicked open the front door of her house between 2 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. Wednesday. Once inside the house, the thief stole a Sanyo 27-inch television, four herringbone necklaces, a Gold Kist herringbone peanut bracelet, nine rings and clothes.

After taking the items from the house, the thief then stole an Audiovox 10-inch speaker with speakerbox and a 600-watt amplifier from Byrd’s Infiniti J-30. The value of the items reported stolen was about $2,409.

Byrd reported Monday Christopher Dixon came to her house about 8:55 a.m. and forced her to go somewhere with him. She was able to escape and contacted another man, Edward Neil Huntley, 37, of 906 W. First St. in Adel, about the incident.

While Byrd and Huntley were at the house, Dixon allegedly came back and fired a gunshot at Huntley. Huntley then allegedly fired back several times, hitting Dixon twice. Dixon was able to drive to a house in Tift County following the shooting, but he was taken to Tift Regional Medical Center for the injuries and was listed in fair condition as of Wednesday afternoon. A call to check his condition Thursday was not returned by Tift Regional.

Huntley was apprehended Monday and charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Dixon has not yet been charged in the incident, but the Moultrie Police Department is investigating the incident with charges possible against him.
