Police officer injured in foot chase

Staff Reports

MOULTRIE — A Moultrie man was apprehended after he was found with suspected marijuana and allegedly fled from officers on foot Monday night. A Moultrie police officer was injured during the chase.

Nathaniel Baker, 21, of 601 Sixth St. S.E., was charged with possession of marijuana less than one ounce, duty to obey an officer and probation violation.

Moultrie police officers were called to Second Avenue Northwest at 9:38 p.m. Monday about gunshots being fired. Officers spoke with several people about the incident, including Baker, who officers said acted nervous when they did a warrant check on him.

An officer performed a pat down search of Baker, and an object with stems was found in a pocket. Baker stated it was money, but the officer found it was a plastic bag with suspected marijuana inside.

When the officer told Baker to put his hands behind his back, he allegedly ran off. Officers chased him down Second Avenue Northwest, and he was found hiding under a shed at the corner of First Avenue Northwest and Sixth Street Northwest. During the chase, an officer stepped into a hole and injured his knee.

Baker was pulled out from under the shed, placed under arrest and taken to Colquitt County Jail. The injured officer went to Colquitt Regional Medical Center , and a hospital spokesperson said he was treated and released Monday.
