MOULTRIE — Rooms all around Moultrie and Colquitt County will look prettier and more organized if students put into practice a new course being offered at Moultrie Technical College.

Moultrie Tech will offer an interior design specialist certification program at its Veterans Parkway campus starting April 2. Marketing and Public Relations Director Jana Wiggins said the program has been offered as an online program for two years, but this is the first time it is being offered on campus.

Moultrie Tech is the only technical college in Georgia to offer the interior design certification program, Wiggins said. This program will also be unique since students will be able to learn and complete assignments at Triangle Furniture in Industrial Drive.

Jonathan Edwards, owner and operator of Triangle Furniture, suggested the program, Wiggins said, and he volunteered to allow the students to use Triangle’s inventory to have a hands-on approach for the class.

Edwards said he is very excited to have the class out at Triangle as students learn about interior design. He thinks it will be very beneficial for Moultrie Tech, the students and Triangle.

“We’re thrilled to have the partnership with Moultrie Tech,” he said. “We are wide open to whatever (the students) need.”

The five-course program can be completed in one quarter if the student desires, Wiggins said. Classes required for certification include introduction to microcomputers, furniture and accessories, materials and resources, interior design fundamentals and color theory. All courses will be offered during the spring quarter.

The course is being taught by Marie Brown and Monica Funderburk, both of whom earned bachelor’s degrees in interior design and have both work and teaching experience. Brown said she earned her degree from the University of Georgia and has taught courses at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College before coming to Moultrie Tech. She currently runs her own interior design business, Harrison Design.

Funderburk said she earned her bachelor’s degree from Georgia Southern University and also has previous teaching experience. She worked with a design firm in Albany for eight years and now does freelance interior design work.

Both Brown and Funderburk said they are very excited about teaching interior design at Moultrie Tech. Once students complete the course, they will be able to work as design consultants, work in home improvement, assist designers or do freelance design work.

Wiggins said anyone interested in enrolling in the certification program is strongly encouraged to apply at Moultrie Tech as soon as possible. Late registration for spring quarter will be Monday, March 31, and most applicants will be eligible for grants through the HOPE Scholarship program.
