Family escapes fire

Staff Reports

HARTSFIELD — A mobile home on Oak Grove Church Road in Hartsfield was damaged by fire Wednesday night. The family living at the house, however, escaped without injury.

Volunteer firefighters from Bay, Funston, Rockyford and Westside volunteer fire departments responded to 285 Oak Grove Church Road about 10:55 p.m. Wednesday. A Colquitt County sheriff’s deputy also responded to the scene and found the family safely outside.

Occupant Randy Murphy stated he was awakened by a noise and stated he thought it was his grandchildren playing. When he got up, however, he saw a fire in the ceiling and got everyone out safely.

The fire was believed to have been an electrical short in the wiring, fire officials said. It started near the back door and was contained to a small area before being extinguished.

The Red Cross of Colquitt County was also at the scene and provided assistance to Murphy’s family, which will be staying with relatives following the fire.
