Neighbor saves 2 from fire
Mobile home a total loss

Staff Reports

DOERUN — Two residents were rescued from a blazing mobile home early Friday morning. The home was destroyed.

A neighbor reported the fire at 162 Pearlie Knight Lane in Doerun at 1:08 a.m., according to volunteer firefighters’ reports. The New Elm, Doerun and Northside volunteer fire departments responded. When they arrived, they found the mobile home engulfed in flames.

The neighbor who reported the fire was able to rescue Chris Johns and Linda Rogers from inside the house, firefighters said.

Albany TV station WALB identified the neighbor as Winston Walden.

“I saw the thing smoking, and I said ‘Oh, my God.’ So I went over there and snatched that back door open and the boy fell out in my arms. Then we had to get in there and pull his momma out. She was wrapped up in blankets but finally got her to the door,” Walden told WALB, according to the TV station’s website.

Rogers suffered injuries from the fire, firefighters said, but it was not known where she was taken for treatment. Hospital spokespersons at Colquitt Regional Medical Center and the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta could not find a patient by her name listed as being taken to either hospital.

The house was declared a total loss, but the cause of the fire was unknown due to the extent of damage. The Red Cross of Colquitt County was on hand to provide assistance to the family, including temporary shelter.
