MOULTRIE — A forgery suspect allegedly dragged a Colquitt County sheriff’s deputy about 50 feet as he tried to drive away from a traffic stop Tuesday. The deputy ran back to his patrol car and pursued him, capturing him after he ditched his vehicle and tried to flee on foot.
Jason Nicholas Dean, 29, of 121 Tillman St. in Berlin, was charged with four counts of forgery, driving with a suspended license, reckless driving, failure to maintain lane, failure to obey a traffic control device, driving too fast for conditions, five counts of a turn signal required, improper stopping in a roadway and obstruction.
Sheriff’s deputies went to Dean’s house on Tillman Street in Berlin to serve the forgery warrants and spoke with the homeowners, Tim and Dianna Meeks. They stated Dean was staying there but had left about an hour earlier, driving their GMC truck, to pick up some property, according to the deputies’ report.
At 4:27 p.m. Tuesday, one of the deputies spotted the GMC truck turning onto Rowland Drive from North Veterans Parkway. His report said he pulled the truck over on Rowland Drive, and he spoke with Dean, who had his license suspended for failure to pay a ticket.
When the deputy asked Dean to get out of the truck, he allegedly put it into drive and began to pull away, the deputy reported. The deputy reached in to try to grab the keys, and he was dragged about 50 feet as Dean drove away.
The deputy was able to get back to his patrol car and began pursuing the truck onto Rowland Drive and Sunset Avenue before getting onto Veterans Parkway. A second deputy joined the pursuit as the truck allegedly ran a red light at the Veterans Parkway and First Avenue Southeast intersection and turned onto Highway 133, the deputy’s report said.
The deputies caught up with the truck as it slowed down near the Old Adel Highway intersection and continued the low-speed pursuit to McCall Way. Dean then stopped the truck in the middle of the road and fled on foot, the report said, and he was caught and placed under arrest after a brief chase. He was taken to Colquitt County Jail, and the truck was turned over to Tim Meeks.
