Peacock Day today in Pavo

— THOMASVILLE — It’s time for a community to strut its stuff during the 21st annual Peacock Day Saturday in Pavo.
“It’s truly a great day for family fun,” City Clerk Pat Hall said.
Activities for the entire family include a parade, arts and crafts, children’s games and live entertainment.
“It brings the community together and also raises money,” Eileen Weiss, president of Pavo Civic Club, said. “It’s a fund-raiser so we can continue to do projects for our senior citizens and the community. It helps keep our community going.”
Peacock Day is always held the second Saturday in May.
The town’s name was changed more than 100 years ago from McDonald, the name of one of its most prominent families, to “Pavo.” The other prominent family, the Peacocks, wanted the town named after them, but no one agreed. After some research, they discovered “pavo” is Latin for “peacock,” and it was agreed to make that the town’s name.
This year’s parade grand marshals are former Miss Pavos. The parade will feature approximately 50 entries, including bands, cars and beauty queens. There is also a special section for seniors to sit.
Participants can also sit back and enjoy the sounds of “The Grey Brothers Band” (sponsored by Oxley’s) and other local entertainment throughout the afternoon.
“They play all kinds of music, popular to country tunes,” Weiss said. “Most of the members are local, so that is nice. They understand the importance of this event.”
Children’s activities include pony rides, train rides, bungee jumping and wall climbing.
There are numerous arts and crafts and food vendors, set up outside the Peacock Center and inside the auditorium and lunchroom.
Tickets are sold out for the annual Donkey Drop (the winner will receive $200) but are still available for the annual Peacock Quilters Peacock Quilt.
“I think the whole day is wonderful,” Weiss said. “I love how the Pavo Civic Club members work together as a great unit to bring forth our community spirit. We hope everyone comes out and enjoys the festival.”
