Two accidents on Fifth Avenue

Staff Reports

MOULTRIE — Two Thursday wrecks were blamed on a ringing cell phone and something running into the road. One of the wrecks sent a woman to the hospital, while the other damaged two utility poles but caused no serious injuries.

Both wrecks happened on Fifth Avenue Southeast.

A Nissan Murano, driven by Molly McCall, of 9 Old Tram Road, was driving on Fifth Avenue Southeast at 6:48 a.m. Thursday. Just as she passed the Talmadge Drive intersection, McCall said, she was distracted by her cell phone and ran off the side of the road.

The Murano ended up in a ditch before McCall had time to react and maneuver out of it. The vehicle suffered slight damage, but McCall was taken to Colquitt Regional Medical Center, where a hospital spokesperson said she was treated for her injuries and released Thursday.

In a second accident, a Ford Windstar, driven by Pamela Jackson, of 1008 10th Ave. S.E., was driving on Fifth Avenue Southeast about 1:10 p.m. Thursday. As it approached the Eighth Street Southeast intersection, Jackson thought something ran out onto to roadway in front of her, she told police.

When Jackson swerved to avoid what ran into the road, she ran up onto a sidewalk near a doctor’s office. She then hit a utility pole, snapping it in two, at the intersection and continued across Eighth Street Southeast. She then sideswiped a second utility pole opposite side of Eighth Street Southeast.

The Windstar’s airbag had deployed when an officer arrived at the scene, but Jackson stated she was not injured. She was not cited in the accident.
