Officer injured while in pursuit of suspect

Staff Reports

MOULTRIE — A Moultrie police officer was injured when she tried to chase down a suspect who fled into some woods early Monday morning.

The officer, Kimberly Weissinger, was on First Avenue Southeast at 1:26 a.m. Monday when she spotted a black male walking off of the back porch at Rayon Supermarket and fled on foot. The man was carrying a long, unknown object in his hand, and the officer began to pursue him.

The officer yelled for the man to stop several times as she called in her location over the radio. The man stumbled as he ran, and she was able to take him down before she was hit in the head with an unknown object.

The officer let go of the man after she was hit, and he escaped behind Harvey’s Supermarket. The officer was taken to Colquitt Regional Medical Center and was treated for a concussion, and she had a knot on the right side of her head, a swollen cheek and bruising. A hospital spokesperson said she was treated for her injuries and released Monday.
