Woman stabbed in eye during fight
Staff Reports
MOULTRIE — Police charged a Moultrie woman after a fight that injured another woman. The victim, Shameka Thomas, will lose the use of one eye due to the injury, police said.
Gloria Jean Clay, 40, of 413 11th Court N.W., was charged with aggravated assault Monday night.
A Moultrie police officer was called to a house on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive about 8:15 p.m. Monday about a fight. When he arrived, he found Thomas sitting on the steps and bleeding from her head.
As the officer went to look closer at Thomas, a witness came up and stated Clay allegedly stabbed Thomas in the eye with a Phillips screwdriver, according to the officer’s report. The officer said he saw what looked like a stab wound to her eye and an injury to the side of her head around her ear.
Moultrie police investigator Sgt. Seth Walters said it appeared Thomas was stabbed twice with the screwdriver. While her eyeball itself did not appear to be injured, she suffered nerve damage that will cause her to lose total use of her eye, he said.
A second officer came to the scene, and Thomas told them she and Clay got into a fight. It was during the fight that Clay allegedly stabbed her in the eye with the screwdriver.
Clay was placed under arrest and taken to Colquitt County Jail, and Thomas was taken to Colquitt Regional Medical Center for treatment.
