MOULTRIE — The end of the school year is bringing about some administrative changes in Colquitt County Schools.
Funston Elementary Principal Lynn Clark has been promoted to elementary curriculum coordinator, a position that will fold the principalship of the prekindergarten program into it. Prekindergarten Director Joy Webb is retiring.
In addition, Clark will work with instructional coaches at the elementary level, have oversight of elementary curriculum and will become the English/language arts specialist for grades K through 12 for the district, Superintendent Leonard McCoy said Tuesday. Clark’s office site will be at the Moultrie Tech prekindergarten center.
“Lynn is extremely competent. I don’t know when I’ve recommended someone for a position that was any better qualified based on both experience and achievements. She’ll do a great job, and while it might be a sad day for Funston, they will still get the benefit of her leadership skills as will all the schools in Colquitt County,” McCoy said.
Clark taught at the former Pineland Elementary School, then Sunset Elementary before entering administrative work as assistant principal at C.A. Gray Middle School. She was later principal at Norman Park Elementary until 2001 at which point she became principal at Funston Elementary.
Among her accomplishments at Funston, she achieved the Governor’s 2007 Goal Award for the greatest gains on the Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT) and most recently the school was chosen as one of 14 stops on the prestigious Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education (GPEE) during its 16th Annual Bus Trip Across Georgia in November.
Clark has been a member of Gov. Sonny Perdue’s committee for Master Teacher and Academic Coach implementation and currently serves as president of the Georgia Association of Elementary Principals.
Another transition: Cox Elementary Assistant Principal Laura Whitfield is being promoted to principal to replace Thomas Fleming. Whitfield has been assistant principal for three years and before that was a teacher there for one year.
She brings 22 years teaching experience to the job. She has spent much of her teaching career in Cook County and has taught grades 2, 3, 4 and 5, he said. She was site lead at the school level for Southern Association of Colleges and Schools accreditation program and was recommended by the district for a leadership development program at Valdosta State University.
Applications to succeed Clark at Funston Elementary are being accepted. The deadline for applications is June 6. McCoy hopes to make recommendations to the school board for the new principal by June 23 if not sooner, he said.
