MOULTRIE — A Colquitt County woman has been linked to the arrest of a Baker County deputy on a federal warrant.

Monica Faye Jones, a Colquitt Countian wanted in Baker County for violating her probation, allegedly cut a deal with Deputy Chad Smith, The Albany Herald reported Wednesday. Jones allegedly gave Smith “property” in return for not arresting her, the newspaper quoted court documents as saying.

Smith was booked in Monday night after being interviewed by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, The Herald reported. He’s charged with one count of extortion under color of official right.

Federal Magistrate Richard Hodge ordered him freed on an unsecured $15,000 bond Tuesday. Court officials said he will likely enter a not guilty plea at an arraignment hearing set for June 18, The Herald’s website said.

The deputy has been suspended until the outcome of an investigation, Baker County Sheriff Isaac Anderson told The Herald, but he said the arrest will probably cost him his job.

Smith had transferred from the Bainbridge Department of Public Safety to the Baker County Sheriff’s Office three months ago, and Anderson said he’d been a good employee.

Anderson said his deputies had been looking for Jones, but that Smith said he was having trouble finding her.

“They couldn’t ever find her is what he said,” Anderson told The Herald. “My other deputies been going around trying to find her too, but they can’t seem to find her.”
