Man charged in senior center incident

Staff Reports

MOULTRIE — A Moultrie man was charged Tuesday after he allegedly put his groin against a woman’s rear end Monday.

George Barry DeMott, 58, of West Mulberry Street in Funston, was charged with sexual battery and probation violation.

DeMott allegedly came up behind a woman while both were in the kitchen at the Moultrie Senior Center on First Avenue Southwest Monday. While the woman was bent over at the sink, DeMott allegedly thrust his groin against her rear end twice.

Shortly after the incident, DeMott came back to the woman and asked her to help him tie his apron. She walked away from DeMott and reported the incident to the Senior Center supervisors, and the police were then contacted.

Senior Center Director Judy Hiers said DeMott and the woman were both community service workers. Both were in the kitchen when the alleged incident took place, and no seniors were involved in it.

“This did not affect the seniors in any way, shape or form,” Hiers said. There had never been a problem with the community service workers prior to the alleged incident, she said.
