Thomasville man charged in Moultrie hit-and-run

Staff Reports

MOULTRIE — A Thomasville man faces multiple charges after he allegedly left the scene of an accident Monday morning.

Johnny Mathis Allen Jr., 23, of 67 Patrick Lane in Thomasville, was charged with running a red light, striking a fixed object, failure to stop at an accident with damage, driving without a license, an open container violation and probation violation.

Moultrie police said a Ford Taurus, driven by Kizzy Scott, of 624 Third St. N.W., was sitting at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Second Street Southeast waiting for the light to turn green at 10:12 a.m. Monday. A white truck, driven by an unknown person, had the green light as it went through the intersection on Second Street Southeast. A Pontiac G6, driven by Allen on Fifth Avenue Southeast, allegedly ran the red light and also entered the intersection.

The truck hit the G6, causing the car to spin around and collide with the Taurus. Following the collision, the G6 allegedly drove through the fence at Moultrie First Presbyterian Church in an attempt to flee the accident scene. It drove through the back yard of the church and continued on until it crashed through the fence on the opposite side and onto an alley behind the church, causing an estimated $500 in damage to the fence.

The white truck also left the scene trying to catch up with the G6. It never returned to the scene during the investigation, and the driver was not identified.

A description of the damaged vehicle was sent out, and a Moultrie police officer located the G6 at a house on Fourth Street Southwest. The officer spotted Allen, and he was placed under arrest at the house and taken to Colquitt County Jail.

When he was located, Allen allegedly denied he had been in an accident despite the damage to the G6, which had been rented from Enterprise Leasing in Thomasville.
