Woman gives birth in toilet; faces child cruelty charge

Staff Reports

MOULTRIE — A Moultrie woman was apprehended after she allegedly gave birth to a child and tested positive for drugs Thursday morning.

Melissa Lea Conger Bledsoe, 25, of 2122 Old Doerun Road, was charged with cruelty to children.

Colquitt County sheriff’s deputies were called to Colquitt Regional Medical Center on South Main Street at 8:07 a.m. Thursday. An employee with the Department of Family and Children’s Services said paramedics were called to Bledsoe’s house at 4:08 a.m. about her giving birth to a child in her toilet.

Both Bledsoe and the child were brought to Colquitt Regional for treatment. A drug test was done on Bledsoe, and it allegedly came back positive for controlled substances.

Once the tests were returned, Bledsoe was placed under arrest, and the baby was turned over to DFCS. Bledsoe was taken to Colquitt County Jail after she was released from Colquitt Regional.
