Phone scammer hits 2 Norman Park residents
NORMAN PARK — Two Norman Park residents reported Monday they were victims of a telephone scam.
Jerry Young reported to the Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office that someone called his house about 9:20 p.m. Saturday, and Vera Coney reported receiving a similar call Sunday morning. In both cases, the person gave them a name and asked them to call his father to pick him up.
The caller then gave them a number starting with *72 followed by a regular phone number, which Young and Coney reported they called. When the call from them was made, it transferred all incoming calls to the number that they had been given, and they could not receive calls themselves.
While the transfer was in place, the caller made a total of 28 calls using Young’s and Coney’s home numbers, which lasted about 500 minutes total. Both incidents took place between 9:20 p.m. Saturday and 10:37 p.m. Sunday before Young and Coney had their phone service restored.
