THOMASVILLE — Tyler Tucker, 20, of Moultrie has received a $1,000 scholarship from the Thomasville Entertainment Foundation to study classical music in Italy.

A 2007 graduate of Thomasville High School currently majoring in voice performance at Florida State University, Tucker travels to Voels am Schlem in northern Italy in July for a language-intensive vocal performance class emphasizing art song, arias and chamber music.

“I would love to be able to perform and sing opera as a career choice,” Tucker said.

After completing his undergraduate studies, Tucker hopes to attain a dual master’s degree in voice performance and opera coaching, giving him opportunities to perform and to coach other performers in major opera companies.

“The program in Italy will bolster my foreign language skills and give me a chance to perform with and coach singers from around the world,” he said.

Tucker, the son of Steve and Carol Fleming of Moultrie, served as student director of Thomasville Music and Drama Troupe and Junior Troupe instructor while in high school. He was awarded a full music scholarship to FSU, where he participates in campus opera productions. Tucker competed in the regional National Association of Teachers of Singing competition, capturing first place in the sophomore men category.

Throughout its 72-year history, the Thomasville Entertainment Foundation has provided music scholarships and travel grants to assist young musicians from the local community. The all-volunteer organization sponsors a six-concert series and provides educational outreach to encourage interest in the performing arts.
