Sweet potatoes catch fire; smoke alarm wakes resident

Staff Reports

MOULTRIE — A smoke detector alerted a Moultrie woman about some burning sweet potatoes Monday night.

The Moultrie Fire Department was called to 1909 Garden Villa Drive at 9:51 p.m. Monday. When they arrived, firefighters spoke with Monica Soloria, the resident at the house.

She stated she had put some sweet potatoes on the stove to cook and went into her living room. She fell asleep on the couch and was awakened by the smoke detector and found the potatoes burning.

Soloria took the potatoes and pan off the stove and took them into her front yard. There was no damage to anything except the pan used, and firefighters vented light smoke out of her house using exhaust fans. No one inside the house was injured.
