Service for McCoy tonight

— MOULTRIE — Sen. Saxby Chambliss is among the speakers expected at tonight’s memorial service for Sgt. Steve McCoy, a former Moultrian who died after being wounded in Iraq.
The Rev. Jeff Brady, pastor of Joyful Life Church of God, said a celebration of life service for McCoy will be held at 7 p.m. tonight on the courthouse square. He listed Chambliss, Colquitt County ROTC Program Commander Lt. Col. Paul Nagy and Gunnery Sgt. Emmett Bryant among the speakers.
Following the playing of the national anthem, the crowd will be led to the Veterans Memorial for the unveiling of McCoy’s name on the memorial. McCoy’s children will also release balloons in his honor.
“This is something more of a celebration than a funeral,” Brady said. “It will allow Moultrie to pay their respects.”
McCoy died June 10 from injuries he received in a March 23 roadside bomb attack in southern Baghdad. He was buried in Thomson June 19.
Among his survivors are his wife, Tabitha, their twin children, son Landen and daughter Ryley, her parents, Steve and Becky Moore, and family who live in Moultrie. His parents, Sam and Pam McCoy, live in Warren County but are previously of Norman Park
McCoy was a 2003 graduate of Colquitt County High School and was a member of the Junior ROTC Program. He was serving his second tour in Iraq with Alpha Company, 4th Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division based at Ft. Stewart in Hinesville when he was injured.
