4 escape mobile home blaze

Staff Reports

MOULTRIE — A mobile home on Highway 133 South near Spence Field was destroyed by a fire Tuesday afternoon but its four occupants escaped without injury.

Firefighters from the Culbertson, Southside, Berlin and Northside Volunteer Fire Departments were called to 1796 Highway 133 S. at about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday. When they arrived, there were flames and smoke coming from the home, owned by Maury Jackson.

Kathy Burnham, who lived at the house, said she was in her laundry room when her grandson came yelling to her. She then saw the flames and smoke and was able to escape the house without injury. Two other people inside the house, including her grandson, also escaped without injury.

The cause of the fire could not be determined following an investigation, and Burnham said she did not know where the fire originated.

The Red Cross of Colquitt County was on hand to provide vouchers to Burnham, and she will be staying with family following the tragedy. Moultrie police officers and Colquitt County paramedics were also on hand to provide assistance to the firefighters.
