MOULTRIE — Even though the rain from Tropical Storm Fay began to let up Sunday morning, the Moultrie Police Department was out to make sure drivers remained safe on the roads. Five drivers were placed under arrest during the road check at the West Bypass and Alberta Avenue intersection, and officers were able to recover a vehicle reported stolen.
During the road check at 10:09 a.m. Sunday, officers spotted a white Mercury Grand Marquis make an illegal U-turn to avoid the check. An officer got behind the car and turned on his blue lights, but the driver and passenger got out of the car and fled.
While a second officer was on patrol, he met with Anthony Downs at a house on Second Avenue Northwest about 11:40 a.m. He stated he had left the keys in his white Mercury Grand Marquis while visiting his grandmother on Fifth Avenue Southeast Sunday morning and two black males stole the car.
