Haggins leaving Moultrie council
Former police chief challenges Berlin mayor

John Oxford

MOULTRIE — Two Colquitt County municipalities will be going to the polls in November to select city representatives. A third town will have a change on its council without an election.

Qualifying for city council seats in Moultrie, Berlin and Funston were held this week. Elections will be held Nov. 3.

Moultrie can expect one new council member next year, as Councilwoman Betty Haggins did not qualify for re-election. When qualifying closed Friday, Margaret Mathis, John F. Bridges, Susie Magwood-Thomas and Lamont Alderman had all qualified to succeed her.

Councilmen Daniel Dunn and Ronald Wilson Sr. qualified for their seats without opposition.

The City of Berlin will see two races on Election Day. Incumbent Mayor Dale Williams and former Police Chief Jerry Evers qualified to run for mayor, and four people qualified to run for two at-large council seats. Incumbent Lonnie Cannon qualified for the council, as did Cecil Ray Meeks, Curtis Akridge and Tina Bridwell. Councilman Reggie Merritt did not qualify to keep his council seat.

In Funston, Mayor Ferrell Ruis was the only candidate to qualify for his position. Incumbent Councilman Gene Potts and Doug Hall qualified for two city council seats. Hall will take the place of Councilman Gary Strickland, who did not qualify for re-election.
