Former judge, lawmaker Jack Short dies at 86

— DOERUN — Herbert Jack Short, who served Colquitt County as State Court judge and as a state representative, died Friday, Sept. 5, 2008. He was 86.
The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, at Doerun United Methodist Church with burial at Doerun Cemetery. The Revs. Dan Williamson and Joe Smith will officiate. Pallbearers will be Judge Short’s grandsons and Bobby Taylor.
Judge Short was born Aug. 30, 1922, in Doerun to Frank Lafayette Short and Julia Cunningham Short. He graduated from Doerun High School, Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton and the University of Georgia in Athens before earning his Juris Doctorate from the UGA School of Law.
He served in the Army’s 375th Fighter Squadron during the Normandy-Northern France Air Offensive, the Ardennes-Rhineland Campaign and the Central European Campaign.
He served four terms in the Georgia House of Representatives and served as Colquitt County State Court judge. He received a Distinguished Service Award from the State Bar of Georgia for 50 years of service.
A resident of Doerun, Judge Short was a trustee of the ABAC Foundation, a board member of Magnolia Manor, a director of the Ellen Payne Odom Genealogy Library, a Mason, and a founding member of the Colquitt County Food and Clothing Bank. He served on the board of directors of Southwest Georgia Bank, including as vice chairman. He was a lifetime member and served on the Board of Trustees of Doerun United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the VFW and the American Legion’s Doerun post.
Judge Short was preceded in death by his wife, Charlie Roberts Short, and a daughter, Sally Short Mabbett.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Herbert Jack Short Jr. and Lisa Spain Short; daughter and son-in-law, Julianne Short Richwine and Samuel Winters Richwine Jr.; and seven grandchildren, Mary Katherine Short, Herbert Madison Short, Harrison Spain Short, Ryals Drayton Stone, John Rasor Mabbett IV, Elizabeth Ellen Richwine Cook and Samuel Winters Richwine III.
