More Colquitt Countians signing up to vote

Alan Mauldin

MOULTRIE — Prior to a get-out-the-vote push, Colquitt County election officials have seen voter rolls grow by more than 600 ahead of the November election.

Locally the only countywide contested race is for coroner. Colquitt County voters also will cast ballots in U.S. House and Senate contests, non-partisan elections and statewide ballot questions.

Prior to the declared national voter registration month in September Colquitt County’s registrar’s office has been busy registering voters, Registrar Paula McCullough said.

Between March 1 and September, 608 voters were added to the rolls, she said, and more have come in since the Sept. 1 report was completed.

“It’s been steady, very steady, lots of phone calls, people coming in to register,” she said. “We’ve had a lot of people getting applications for voter-registration drives.”

In a news release, McCullough and Election Superintendent Wes Lewis this week released information about voter deadlines and requirements.

In order to vote in the Nov. 4 general election, voters must register in the county in which they reside by Oct. 6. In addition, those who have moved are asked to submit a change of address card with the registrar by that date.

The additional registrations in the county bring the number of registered voters to 20,788, counting active and inactive. Inactive voters are those who have not cast ballots in the previous two elections but are still eligible to vote.

Those who do not vote in two consecutive general election cycles are stricken from the rolls, McCullough said.

Voters can verify their registration status and get voter registration applications online at the Secretary of State’s Web site at http://sos.georgia.gov/ElectionCenter.

McCullough can be contacted at (229) 616-7056, or in person at the Colquitt County Courthouse Annex, 101 E. Central Ave., Room 133, and by mail at P.O. Box 517, Moultrie, GA, 31776.

Voter registration applications also are available at Colquitt County Library, ABAC on the Square, Moultrie Technical College and the Department of Family and Childrens Services, and when renewing a driver’s license.

To register in the state potential voters must be a U.S. citizen, legal resident of Georgia and the county in which they plan to vote, and at least 17 1/2 years old; they must turn 18 before the date of the election.
