Cairo man faces multiple charges

Staff Reports

MOULTRIE — A Cairo man was charged after he allegedly refused to obey a Moultrie police officer Saturday night.

Jesus Rojas, 34, of 315 12th Ave. N.W., in Cairo, was charged with running a red light, DUI, an open container violation, driving without a license and resisting arrest.

An officer was informed of a white minivan driving on Highway133 speeding and weaving over the roadway Saturday. At 8:54 p.m., he spotted the Chevrolet Lumina minivan on North Veterans Parkway, watching as it allegedly ran a red light at the Rowland Drive extension.

The officer pulled the Lumina van over in the Applebee’s parking lot and opened the driver’s side door, allegedly smelling the odor of an alcoholic beverage. The driver, later identified as Rojas, was talking on his cell phone when the officer walked to the door. He asked Rojas to get off the phone, but Rojas allegedly laughed at the officer then continued his conversation.

The officer went to grab the cell phone, but Rojas allegedly pushed the officer’s hand away. The officer then pulled Rojas out of the van by his arm, but Rojas allegedly tried to pull away. Two Colquitt County sheriff’s deputies arrived to assist the officer, and Rojas was taken to the ground and placed under arrest following a brief struggle. He received a cut above his left eye from the alleged struggle that required stitches to close, police reports stated.

After being taken to Colquitt Regional Medical Center for treatment of the injury, Rojas was taken to Colquitt County Jail.
