ABAC goes to Expo Oct. 14-16

Staff Reports

TIFTON — From education to entertainment, Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College will be heavily involved when the Sunbelt Agricultural Exposition takes place at Spence Field near Moultrie today through Thursday.

Titled “North America’s Premier Farm Show,” the Expo began as a series of small equipment shows on the ABAC campus in the mid 1960s. Now it has 1,200 exhibitors from 46 states and several international destinations.

Since 1999, ABAC has had its own building at the Expo site, courtesy of Lanier Carson and Kelley Manufacturing. This year, the college will mix entertainment from ABAC students with interactive educational presentations from faculty members in the Division of Agriculture and Forest Resources.

ABAC students Jessica Padgett from Sylvester and Colton Farrow from Pitts will sing today, the ABAC Jazz Choir will perform Wednesday, and the ABAC Jazz Band will perform Thursday.

The ABAC Ambassadors will offer ABAC souvenirs and emcee the stage presentations. Horticulture Club students arrange plants and flowers around the exhibit. Admissions Office personnel meet with prospective students, and Advancement Office personnel will reconnect with alumni. Members of the AET Club will man a service truck, and Raccooners’ Club members will assist with the stock dog trials.

ABAC will use the Expo as a showcase for its new bachelor of applied science degrees in diversified agriculture and turfgrass and golf course management as well as joint four-year degrees with Georgia Southwestern State University in natural resource management, accounting, management, and early childhood education.

The Expo opens at 8:30 a.m. each of the three days. It closes at 5 p.m. on Oct. 14-15 and 4 p.m. on Oct. 16. Cost of admission is $7 per person.
