Blood clot blamed for woman’s death

MOULTRIE — The death of a Moultrie woman who died at Southwestern State Hospital in Thomasville was caused by a blood clot, Thomas County Coroner Sam Brown said Friday.

Monica Edwards, 27, collapsed inside a unit at the mental health facility Friday evening and was pronounced dead there at 7:01 p.m.

An autopsy was performed on Monday at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation laboratory in Decatur.

The autopsy showed that a blood clot in Edwards’ left leg was the cause of death, Brown said.

“That’s one of those things you can’t do anything about,” he said. “It just happens sometimes.”

Brown said staff were present in the unit at the time Brown collapsed.

A spokeswoman with the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities, which oversees the state mental facilities, said this week that the agency does not comment on specific cases.
