MOULTRIE — A Moultrie man was apprehended after he allegedly tried to break into a house Sunday morning. The homeowner held the suspect at gunpoint until officers arrived at the scene. Jimmy Lee Williams, 66, of 417 Sixth St. S.W., was charged with criminal attempt and possession of tools during the commission of a crime.
Moultrie police officers were called to a house on Eighth Avenue Northeast at 11:02 a.m. Sunday about a burglary in progress. When officers arrived, they found Wilbert Mitchell, the homeowner, holding Williams on the ground at gunpoint, police reports said.
Williams was taken into custody, and officers allegedly found a backpack containing various tools, including wrenches and pliers, his wallet and two garbage bags on him. He also allegedly told officers he had a knife on him, which one of the officers found on the front porch, and all items were collected as evidence.
Mitchell stated he found a refrigerator cord on his front porch cut and a damaged screen door on his back porch when he arrived home Saturday night. He said three soft drinks, valued at about $2, were allegedly taken from a cooler on his front porch and put into a plastic yellow bag, police reports said.
In an attempt to catch the alleged burglar, Mitchell stated he parked his vehicle at another location and stayed home and watched if someone jumped over a fence. When he heard someone trying to get inside the house, Mitchell confronted him at gunpoint and contacted 911.
