Eventful week will honor veterans

Staff Reports

MOULTRIE — Colquitt County will be holding a variety of events throughout the week to honor its veterans, including several events scheduled for Veterans Day on Wednesday, Nov. 11.

Veterans Day events will kick off with a children’s letter writing at Chick-fil-A on Fifth Avenue Southeast from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 9. As part of the restaurant’s weekly Family Night, children will be asked to write Christmas letters to U.S. soldiers.

Veterans Day itself will see a variety of activities honoring veterans throughout the day on Wednesday. Several county schools have planned activities to honor veterans, and Moultrie Technical College will be holding an invitation-only luncheon at 10:45 a.m. to honor current and former faculty and staff who have served in the armed forces.

There will also be a memorial service and wreath-laying ceremony for veterans at Lewis Hill Amphitheater starting at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Following the service, a wreath will be laid at the Colquitt County War Memorial on the courthouse square.

Events honoring veterans will continue into Friday, Nov. 13, with two special events planned. There will be a breakfast social for veterans at the Ellen Payne Odom Genealogy Library from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m., and the Georgia Department of Labor will host a lunch for veterans from noon until 2 p.m.

Veterans Day events will conclude with the 21st annual Veterans Day Prayer Breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 14. The speaker for the breakfast will be Bill Abbott, a prisoner of war during the Korean War and the author of the book, “Blood Runs Red, White and Blue.” The breakfast is open to veterans and their families, widows, orphans and friends.
