MOULTRIE — The City of Moultrie officially designated a portion of Third Street Northwest in honor of a local minister Monday.
A ceremony was held Monday to unveil a sign designating part of Third Street Northwest from First Avenue Northwest to Northside Drive in honor of the late Superintendent Paul E. Hayes Sr., who died Jan. 17.
Moultrie Mayor William McIntosh said the small crowd of family, friends and church members was there to honor Hayes. The mayor also read a resolution signed by the Moultrie City Council July 22 in honor of Hayes.
“This is a fitting tribute to one of the unsung heroes of our community,” McIntosh said.
Members of Hayes family said they appreciated the city doing this in his honor. His son, Paul E. Hayes Jr., said the day was a day of honor for the city and celebration of his father’s life.
Applause went up as a sign designating the street in honor of Hayes was unveiled. McIntosh said he hoped this would be the first of many recognitions of the “unsung heroes” in the community.
