MOULTRIE — The latest unemployment numbers for counties are a mixed bag, with some counties showing an increase in joblessness while others saw falling unemployment.

In Colquitt County the unemployment rate was 9.4 percent, up from the adjusted 9.1 percent in September, according to figures released this week by the Georgia Department of Labor. The county’s unemployment rate was 7.5 percent in October 2008.

Brooks County showed a 0.6 percent decline in the unemployment rate, from 8.6 percent in September to 8 percent in October.

Cook County’s unemployment rate increased from 12.4 percent in September to 12.8 percent in October.

Mitchell County’s unemployment rate decreased by 0.4 percent, from 10.6 percent in September to 10.2 percent in October.

Tift County’s unemployment rate increased from 10.7 percent in September to 11 percent in October.

Thomas County had a 0.3 percent decline, from 9.4 percent in September to 9.1 in October.

Among area metropolitan areas, Albany saw an increase from 10.2 percent to 10.5 percent, and Valdosta’s unemployment rate increased from 8.2 percent to 8.4 percent.

The Atlanta area was unchanged at 10.4 percent.

Among the state’s counties the highest unemployment rate was in Hancock County at 20.4 percent.

The lowest rate was 5.9 percent in Oconee County.
