Staff Reports

TIFTON — Ring in the holidays this year with a Holiday Music Celebration on Dec. 4 at 4 p.m. in the Chapel of All Faiths at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, and come hear the college’s music majors at 5 p.m. on the following two days, also at the chapel.

The Holiday Music Celebration is open to the public at no charge as a part of ABAC’s 100th birthday celebration. Refreshments will be served in the lobby of the adjacent music building when the concert ends.

The concert will feature the ABAC Jazz Trio with Erin Palmer on piano, Trent Lumpkin on bass, and Johnathan Thomas on drums. The trio will play favorites like “Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town” and “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.”

The 20-member ABAC Jazz Choir, directed by Susan Roe, will also perform holiday selections. The group includes Alli Brown, Rosanna Grasser, Perry Greer, James Mitcham, Ashley Williams, Lindsey Roberts, Brittany Moody, Megan Pro, Willie Dean, Michael Hamilton, Joshua Harrell, Brian Holland and Meagan Royal, all from Tifton.

Other performers in the group include Savannah Rogers from Norman Park, Kayla Wise from Ashburn, Jessica Cone from Thomasville, Tori Bozeman from Moultrie, Haley Parrish from Moultrie and Erlencia Mumphrey from Albany.

Herbert Shippey, a humanities division faculty member, will present an inspirational reading, and Arts Connection director Wayne Jones will sing “Sweet Little Jesus Boy.”

The concert will close with audience participation in beloved Christmas songs such as “Joy to the World,” “Hark the Herald Angels Sing” and “Come All Ye Faithful.” As a grand finale, Roe will sing “O Holy Night,” accompanied on piano by Erin Palmer.

The entire community is invited to join the college faculty, staff, and students for this afternoon of holiday cheer. For more information, contact Roe at 391-4943.

Then, on Dec. 5 and 6, ABAC music majors will hold their recitals at 5 p.m. in the Chapel of All Faiths.

The recitals will last approximately one hour and will feature a diversity of styles in performance ranging from voices to hand-held and upright instruments. Performances are free to anyone who would like to attend.

The Dec. 5 recital will feature Meagan Royal from Tifton, mezzo-soprano; Haley Parrish from Moultrie, contralto; Tori Bozeman from Moultrie, mezzo-soprano; Josh Harrell of Tifton, baritone; Harry King from Tifton, bass; Johnathan Thomas from Tifton, percussion; Rebecca Hampton from Tifton, percussion; Trent Lumpkin from Poulan, double bass; John Neely from Moultrie, guitar; and Stephanie Hunt from Tifton, clarinet.

Participants in the Dec. 6 recital include Erlencia Mumphrey from Tifton, alto; Joshua Barber from Omega, tenor; Savannah Rogers from Norman Park, soprano; Michael Hamilton from Tifton, tenor; Ashley Williams from Tifton, soprano; Rebecca Fraser from Rincon, flute; Joshua Taylor from Ochlocknee, guitar; Chandler Hill from Adel, trombone; David Durden from Tifton, guitar; and Kayla Wise from Ashburn, soprano.

ABAC music faculty members Don Coates and Susan Roe said the music majors have been working diligently on preparing their individual pieces to present in recital. At the present time there are 24 music majors with 20 of those performing in recital this semester. Roe said it takes an immense amount of time for each individual in practice, applied lessons, and dedication to prepare for this recital.

“Both recitals are sure to be exquisite presentations of the talents of each dedicated student,” Roe said. “Musical selections will feature representative compositions of composers from the Baroque through the 20th century.”
