MOULTRIE — A fourth-grade student celebrated her 10th birthday Sunday with a spirit of giving to the four-legged residents of Moultrie.
Summer Ricks, a student at Okapilco Elementary School, celebrated her 10th birthday with a skating party Sunday. Instead of asking for presents, however, she asked everyone to bring something to donate to the Moultrie-Colquitt County Humane Society.
Ricks’ father, Tracy White, said he and her mother, April, were extremely proud of her. The family brought all of the pet food, bowls, cat litter, bleach and toys to the Humane Society Monday. Ricks said she wanted to collect all the food to help all the animals there to have a Christmas.
The food collection was a family task, as Ricks’ parents, her grandparents, James and Jennifer Ellis of Moultrie and Don Sellers of Poulan, all helped. Her great-grandmother, Faye Rowe, also helped Ricks collect all of the donations.
Humane Society Director Don Flowers said all of the food donated by Ricks will last for about a day. The shelter currently holds about 160 dogs and cats even though it is set up to hold only 110 animals. Flowers said he was very appreciative to Ricks for her donation.
In addition to the pet supply donations, Flowers said the Humane Society is also collecting aluminum cans and old cell phones to help raise money. For those interested in adopting an animal, all animals for adoption can be found on the Petfinder.com Web site at www.petfinder.com.
