2 drivers still hospitalized after Monday collision

MOULTRIE — Two of the drivers injured Monday morning in a massive collision of three big trucks remained hospitalized on Tuesday, with one in serious condition.

Emergency workers were at the scene of the accident at the intersection of U.S. Highway 319 and Highway 133 for about five hours as the wreck was cleared and investigated.

The Georgia State Patrol said that the driver of one of the trucks ran a red light and crashed into two other trucks.

That driver, Kendrick Brown, 35, of Moultrie, was the most severely injured and was flown to Archbold Memorial Hospital by helicopter.

State patrol reports said that the 2000 Kenworth truck he was driving struck the driver’s side of a 2005 International truck driven by Crystal Hutchens of Ty Ty, who was driving north on Highway 319 in the right outside lane.

The International was identified as a Mayfield Ice Cream truck by Moultrie Fire Department reports.

After the collision with the ice cream truck, Kendrick’s truck collided with a 2012 Kenworth driven by Dexter Newton, 29, of Albany, that was stopped at the traffic signal, the state patrol said. He was headed south on Highway 133 and in the left inside lane.

The ice cream truck rotated counterclockwise after the impact and overturned, coming to rest on the passenger side in the intersection, the agency said.

Brown was in serious condition Tuesday at Archbold Memorial Hospital and Hutchens was in good condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.

A spokeswoman at Colquitt Regional Medical Center said that Newton was treated there and released.

Brown was cited for failure to obey traffic control devices.
