A great occasion

Dear editor:
The 2008 Relay for Life on April 25 was a great success, thanks to the 39 dedicated teams, board members, the corporate sponsors and the generous support of the community.
So far, we have collected $114,123.41. These monies will again be used for research and helping those in our community with medical, monetary and educational needs.
To all of the businesses who came through at the last minute with donations to place in the goody bags for our survivors, a very special thank you. There is not enough space on this page to name everyone, but I hope that each survivor will personally thank you for your support. We had enough goodies to fill 130 bags.
The breakfast for the survivors was uplifting. To see and hear the ones who have been through the trials and tribulations of the dreaded disease of cancer is both heart warming and heart wrenching at the same time.
If you did not attend the Relay, you missed an exhilarating occasion. Watching those survivors take the first victory lap was demonstrative of the results of cancer research supported by your donations. Great strides have been made, resulting in a longer, more fulfilling life for cancer victims.
The Luminary ceremony and the lighting of the luminaries is a moving experience. We celebrate those who are still with us, remember those who lost their battle and pledge to fight back for those who will face the news of cancer. It touches your heart, your soul and your mind. If you have not experienced this part of the Relay, I invite you to attend next year.
In 2008, Colquitt County will possibly have 200 new cancer patients. I urge you to make a pledge to do all you can to live a healthier life. Ladies, get your mammogram, men and women get your colonoscopy and men have your PSA levels checked at the recommended intervals. Early detection can save your life!
We will not close the books on the 2008 Relay until the end of July, so donations will be accepted at Commercial Banking Company until that time.
The 2009 Relay for Life will be chaired by Amanda Taylor Moore. If you would like to participate, please contact her, as she will begin planning for that Relay within the next few weeks.
Thank you again for all who helped in any way.
Alice Griner
2008 Relay chairman,
Moultrie
