MURPHY, N.C. —
"Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He lives in the hearts of others." I may have misquoted that, but I wanted to share with you this act of caring and love. Our daughter, Carrie, and her husband , a Marine, stationed in North Carolina (Lewis) just did an amazing thing. One of their neighbors, also a Marine family, could not afford much of a Christmas due to unusual circumstances. Lewis and Carrie went to the other family's home while they were out and decorated their home. They also bought groceries for them.
I am full of pride right now because of this act of love and caring. The spirit of Christmas is alive and well in the hearts of others . Do something for others . In this time of horrific tragedies and greed,it is so beautiful when one hears or sees acts of kindness and love for others. May your heart be full of caring and support for others. May your greatest gift be a gift of time or charity.

A tree house for the Smithsonian? Just a thought
There’s a danger as we get older to become “old fogeys.” I’m not sure what a “fogey” is but I think it’s a polite word for something else, relative to flatulence.

We’re inundated with self-help experts
Several years ago I wrote a column about self-help books. I had been in a large book store and there was a whole section devoted to books that are supposed to help one overcome a wide array of shortcomings. Well since then, it seems the self-help sections of book stores have grown immensely.
Their behavior seems somewhat hypocritical
Our state legislators are at it again.
Senate Bill 98 will prevent abortion coverage under any state or federal healthcare plan in Georgia except for a medical emergency. Apparently there is no exception even for rape or incest.

Where is accountability in regard to vet benefits?
Our legislators have no qualms sending our men and women in uniform into harms way. We who served and those who continue to serve do what is expected in service for our Country, even if it means the giving of our life. Eventually we become Veterans.

The art of orchestrating some conflict
I think I’m becoming too much of a television critic. But it’s fun.
It seems I can hardly watch television anymore without pointing out the flaws of the programming. And then I realize that without those flaws, the show would only last five minutes.
