Colquitt drops region games to Valdosta

MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County boys stayed with unbeaten Valdosta for one quarter on Tuesday, but Thoullit Hunter made sure the game was close no longer.

Hunter scored 14 of his game-high 23 points in the second quarter, breaking a 14-14 tie and leading the Wildcats to an 81-39 Region 1-AAAAA victory over the Packers at the Espy Gymnasium.

The victory raises the Wildcats record to 13-0 overall and 2-0 in the region.

The win also completed a sweep as the Lady Wildcats won the opener 40-39.

The Valdosta boys went into Tuesday’s game averaging nearly 87 points a game and had scored 91 or more seven times.

For the first eight minutes, it did not look as if the Wildcats would approach those figure.

But Valdosta erupted for 23 points in the second quarter and 30 in the third to drop the Packers to 5-7 overall and 0-2 in the region.

Hunter’s 14 second-quarter points came on four 3-pointers and a pair of free throws.

He added three more triples in the third quarter.

Jay Rome had scored scored a total of 62 points in his last two games, but the Packers held him to just 13. Valdosta had 12 players in the scoring column, with Jeremy Fountain adding nine and Rontrell Frazier and Clark Charles each getting seven.

Valdosta hit 10 3-pointers, including seven by Hunter. The Wildcats, who began shooting bonus free throws with 1:46 left in the first quarter, were 25-for-37 from the foul line.

Nate Hill led the Packers with eight points.

The Valdosta boys will travel to Warner Robins on Friday to meet Demons, who are 0-3 in the region.

The Packers will be back at the Espy Gymnasium on Friday for a non-region meeting with Bainbridge.

Valdosta’s girls picked up their first Region 1-AAAAA victory of the season on Tuesday by holding off the cold-shooting Lady Packers. Colquitt’s girls were just 13-for-53 from the floor and connected on only 12 of their 27 free throws.
