Coach Kevin Sumner took 14 young wrestlers to the meet. The winning team had 30 wrestlers on its roster.
The Mat Hawgs had seven of their wrestlers win their weight class, including Hart Sumner, Buck Blalock, Anderson Glenn, Johnny Ward, Austin Hunnicutt, Travis Register and Dalton Dillon.
Four others— Charlie Zeanah, Hayes Sumner, John Gray and Whitley Alexander took second-place finishes. Cason Wells finished fourth in his weight class.
The meet drew some 180 wrestlers.
“I’m proud of all our wrestlers,” Kevin Sumner said. “I expected our big guys to do well.”
Sumner said he is hoping the club will help improve the skills of young wrestlers as they compete for the middle school and high teams in Colquitt County.
“I’m pleased with what we’re doing,” Sumner said. “It’s going to take some time. We’re hoping to pick up two or three or four kids a year.
“I just want to get them ready for the high school team.”
Sumner also is a volunteer community coach of the Colquitt County middle school wrestling team.
The Mat Hawgs will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Lyons to compete in the Li’l Bulldog Brawl. On Jan. 17, the team will compete in the Lowndes Classic in Hahira.
The Mat Hawgs have several other competitions to attend before the state qualifier on Feb. 28, in Dublin.
The younger wrestlers will compete at state on March 7 in Roswell. The older boys will got to state on March 14 in Whitewater.
