MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County middle school basketball teams had no answer for what Coffee Middle School threw at them on Thursday, dropping the seventh-grade games at the Charlie A. Gray Middle School gymnasium and the eighth-grade games in Douglas.
In Moultrie, the seventh-grade girls led 22-18 heading into the fourth quarter, but then were outscored 16-6 and fell 34-28.
The loss drops the seventh-grade Lady Packers to 4-6.
Dexshalyn Polite led Colquitt County with 12 points.
Abbi Beth Paulk had eight, Ashlee Parrish had six and Jazzlyn Collier had two.
Destini Giddens led Coffee with 14 points.
The seventh-grade boys lost to Coffee by 18 points the first time the two teams met, but the Packers kept the Trojans in their sights much of the game before falling 46-38.
The game was tied 20-20 at the half and after trailing by seven at the end of three quarters, the Packers pulled to within three Shiem King with 2:46 left.
But Coffee pulled away in the final 2 1/2 minutes, dropping the youngest Packers to 6-4.
For Colquitt County, Brandon Key had nine, Daniel Mobley and Jamiyus Pittman each had seven, Robert Lingo had six, Kenji Thompson had five and King and Jay Tolbert each had two.
C.J. Johnson had 20 and Brandon Roe added 10 for Coffee.
In Douglas, the eighth-grade girls fell to 8-3 on the season after a 37-32 loss to Coffee.
Ja’Nice Sailor led the Lady Packer with 15 points. Cheyenne Reynolds had 11, Shameka Reynolds added four and Tremyia Robinson had two.
“We didn’t get back on defense and we didn’t box out,” coach Palisa Harris said.
The eighth-grade Lady Packers had edged Coffee 28-27 in the season-opener back on Nov. 10.
The eighth-grade boys came off their three-week break and did not play well in a 42-20 loss to one-beaten Coffee.
“We just didn’t show up,” eighth-grade boys coach Roger Jones said. “I was hoping to go over there and do some damage.
“But turnovers killed us. We must have had 40.”
Deonte Johnson and John Peterson each had six points, Nate Madison had four and Carlos Johnson and Octavius Jackson each had two.
The eighth-graders will travel to Hahira Saturday morning. The seventh-graders will play host to Hahira at 10 a.m. Saturday.
