MOULTRIE — Something will have to give tonight in Warner Robins where the Houston County and Colquitt County boys soccer teams will put their 5-1 Region 1-AAAAA records — and their places atop the league standings — on the line.

But while the two teams have identical region records, the Packers will enter the match as decided underdogs.

The Bears are 9-2 overall and are ranked No. 14 in Class AAAAA.

The Packers are 7-4 and are unranked. They also have failed to defeat the Bears since Houston County joined Region 1-AAAAA for the 2005 season.

Houston has won five of the six meetings between the two clubs since then. The only blemish was a 1-1 tie in 2005.

The Bears have won five in a row since.

The Houston County boys finished last season with a 17-3-1 season and were ranked No. 8 in Class AAAAA.

The Bears were 10-2 in the region and advanced to the state quarterfinals before being eliminated by Harrison.

Two of Houston’s 10 region victories last year were over the Packers.

Colquitt lost just three region matches in 2007, but two were by 2-1 and and 2-0 margins to the Bears.

Houston has lost to No. 13 East Coweta and to region foe Warner Robins, both by 1-0 scores.

The Packers are coming off a 2-1 victory over Valdosta on Tuesday. Omar Zapote scored the game-winning goal on a long cross from Tyler Dismuke with 10 minutes remaining.

Zapote joins D.J. Vanzant and Daniel Garcia in leading the Packers with five goals each. Bret Holden and Rich Tyndall each have four goals.

The Colquitt County girls soccer team has had similar problems with their Houston County counterparts. The Lady Packers are 0-6 the Lady Bears over the last three seasons and fell 6-4 and 5-1 last season.

Houston County’s girls will take a 5-1 region record into today’s game and are 6-3 overall.
