MOULTRIE — Houston County continues its boys soccer mastery over Colquitt County, but the Bears needed overtime to get a 1-0 victory over the Packers on Friday at Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium.

The Bears and Packers have met eight times since Houston County joined Region 1-AAAAA for the 2005 season. Houston now has seven wins. The two teams tied 1-1 in 2005.

On Friday, they battled to a scoreless tie after regulation and the tie remained after the first five-minute overtime.

But with 2:22 left in the second overtime, Houston’s Alex Baughman punched a short shot past Packers keeper Trey Brooks and the Bears were able to run out the clock.

It was the second close loss to the region-leading Bears in a week.

On the previous Friday night, the Bears beat the Packers 2-1, outscoring Colquitt 4-2 on penalty kicks after the match was tied 1-1 after regulation and the two overtime periods.

“It’s frustrating,” Packers coach Rob Craft said. “Houston is solid. They move the ball around well.

“Sometimes you just have to catch a break.”

The Packers never could and fall to 7-6 overall and 5-3 in the region.

The Packers will be off until Saturday, April 5, when they play host to Warner Robins.

Also on Friday, the Tift County boys blanked Valdosta 7-0 and Coffee won over Lowndes 3-1.

Colquitt’s girls lost 8-0 to the Houston County girls. It was the Lady Packers fourth straight loss, dropping them to 5-8 overall and 2-6 on the season.

It was their second straight shutout loss to Houston County. The Lady Bears defeated the Colquitt County girls 7-0 the previous Friday in Warner Robins.

The Lady Packers were forced to play without Abbey Taylor, who was attending her brother’s wedding.

Kailey Garrison led the Houston County girls with three goals. Elizabeth Weber added two.
