Bridge Creek shooters fare well

— Three trap teams representing Mike Simpson’s Bridge Creek program placed at Saturday’s Scholastic Clay Target Program’s Georgia Trap State Championship held at the South River Gun Club in Covington.
The Bridge Creek Orange Crush took second place in the Junior Varsity Division, with 921 out of 1,000 targets.
The Bridge Creek team includes Zach Felts of Moultrie, Taylor Bentley and Tyler Foister of Camilla, Ashli Pope of Ocilla and Jacob Smith of Norman Park.
In the Intermediate Entry Division for shooters in grades 6 to 8, the Bridge Creek Clay Dusters were first with 655 of 1,000 targets.
The team included Alex Futch and Todd Shiflett of Moultrie, Chase Hancock of Camilla, Andrew Lovett of Sparks and Reed Williams of Doerun.
The Bridge Creek Roosters, competing in Rookie Division for those in grade 5 and under, were first with 318 of 1,000 targets.
The team includes Ben Shiflett, Taylor Duke and Braxton Jones of Moultrie, Tyler Lirio of Funston and Dalton Thaggard of Doerun.
The teams qualified for the SCTP National Championships to be held July 31-Aug. 5 at the World Shooting and Recreation Complex in Sparta, Ill.
Of this and that:
n State high school baseball tournaments open today with first-round, best-of-3 series in all five classifications.
From Region 1-AAAAA, champion Valdosta will play host to Bradwell Institute; runner-up Warner Robins will entertain Groves; No. 3 Coffee will travel to Jenkins; and No. 4 Tift County will travel to play Region 3-AAAAA champion Camden County.
Former Packer assistant coach Rob Williams will lead his Region 1-AAAA champion Lee County team into a home series against Evan High.
Region 1-AAAA runner-up Thomas County Central will be home against Effingham County; No. 3 Bainbridge will travel to face Statesboro; and No. 4 Americus-Sumter County will go to Greenbrier.
In the Class AAA tournament. the Region 3 runner-up South Effingham County team led by former Packer assistant Tony Kirkland will play host to Westover.
Crisp County, which defeated Colquitt County twice this season, is the Region 1-AAA champion and will play host to Liberty County in the first round.
n In the Class AAAAA state tennis tournament, Tift County, Region 1’s No. 2 seed, has advanced to the Final Four, where it meet Northview Saturday at the Clayton County International Park.
Camden County, which eliminated Colquitt County, will face Walton in the other semifinal.
The Lowndes and Valdosta boys tennis teams have reached the Class AAAAA Final Four.
Valdosta, the Region 1 champion, will play Northview today. The Wildcats have defeated Johnson of Savannah, Luella and Camden County by 5-0 scores to reach the semifinals.
Lowndes, the Region 1 runner-up, will face Etowah in the other semifinal. The Vikings have defeated Jenkins and Union Grove by 5-0 scores before eliminating Tift County 3-2.
n In soccer, Walton and Collins Hill will meet for the Class AAAAA boys championship.
South Forsyth and parkview will meet for the Class AAAAA girls title.
n One of the biggest stories in boys soccer this year was the run the Thomas County Central team made this season.
The Yellow Jackets were one victory away from playing host to a state championship game before losing on Tuesday at Southeast Whitfield 1-0 on a penalty kick in the 71st minute in a semifinal match.
n The Tift County girls basketball team will have a new coach next season.
Julie Conner, who has been the head coach of the Abraham Baldwin College Fillies since 2000, has been named to succeed Michelle Caldwell as the Lady Devils head coach.
Caldwell resigned to take a head coaching position in the Atlanta area.
Conner played her high school basketball at Tift County.
n ABAC now will be looking for two new coaches for its basketball program.
Todd Sheppard also announced this week that he will step down as the Stallions head coach to enter private business.
