Shotgun team members earn trip to Illinois
MOULTRIE — South Georgia Youth Shooting Club members continued their outstanding performances at the Georgia Amateur Trap Association state championships held May at the South River Gun Club in Covington.
Team members competed in the Scholastic Clay Target Program, qualifying them to compete in the National Champions in the New World Shooting Complex run by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources in Sparta, Ill.
The South Georgia Youth Shooting Club returned to Colquitt County with three state championships, one second place, one third place and one fourth place.
Rookie team members for the Bridge Creek Roosters were Dalton Thaggard, Braxton Jones, Ben Shiflett, Taylor Duke and Tyler Lirio.
The intermediate entry level state championship team included Chase Hancock, Reed Williams, Todd Shiflett, Alex Futch and Andrew Lovett.
The advanced intermediate state champion team members are Cody Roberts, Spencer Ensley, Tyler Raulerson, Nathan Bassett and Thomas Hester.
Finishing second in the junior varsity division were team members Taylor Bentley, Zach Felts, Tyler Forster, Ashli Pope and Jacob Smith.
The team posted an outstanding score of 923 out 1,000 targets.
The third place junior varsity division team included Landon Bass, Hunter Hancock, Trey Jones, Austin Thaggard and Logan Hampton.
The junior varsity team of Justin Watson, Holly Hickey, Brett Gerald, Colleen Strickland and Chris Gay finished in fourth place.
The competition drew 155 shooters.
Not only did South Georgia Youth Shooting Club members shine in the scholastic competition, they excelled in the open competition for 16-yard singles, handicap and double trap.
Landon Bass won the sub-junior state championship with a score of 196 out of 200 targets and he will represent Georgia in the national championships.
Hunter Hancock was the sub-junior state champion in handicap and doubles with some outstanding shooting, winning three events.
Taylor Bentley was the junior state champion for double trap and Austin Thaggard was the open class double trap state champion.
