Triangle Furniture wins Mite title

MOULTRIE — The race for the 2008 Mite girls softball championship was finally decided Thursday evening.
It was a photo finish, with Coach Marty Owens’ battle-weary Triangle Furniture team prevailing over a tough Hunnicutt Farms team.
Both Triangle Furniture and Hunnicutt Farms finished the season with 8-4 records, but Triangle Furniture won two of the three head-to-head meetings between the two teams, thus getting the tie-breaking edge.
Bull Durham Insurance finished one game off the pace.
To secure the title, Triangle Furniture had to defeat Morris Orthodontics in its final game.
For the second consecutive game, Alex Gibbs was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 and scoring three runs to help ignite Triangle Furniture to a 9-1 victory over Morris Orthodontics.
Daylyn Stephenson and Lora Grace Bruce added two runs each.
In the Mite League nightcap, Hunnicutt Farms kept pace by defeating Rocky’s 10-2.
Lexi Price and Carly Beth Horne led the way with two runs each.
In Midget league play, VFW came from behind to defeat Wonderland 7-5 and keep its record unblemished.
Ainsley Davis led the balanced VFW attack with two runs.
For Wonderland, Kasie Ricks had a big night by going 3-for-3 and scoring two runs.
J&J Metal Works finished off the Thursday night Midget action with a 9-4 victory over Morris Orthodontics.
Amber Richter and Ashleigh Childs scored two runs each for J&J Metal Works.
Tamera Edwards scored two runs for Morris Orthodontics.
In Tiny Mite girls play, Alexis Griner and Elizabeth Funderburk scored two runs each to help Morris Orthodontics defeat Dairy Queen 11-5.
Hunter Burgess led Dairy Queen with two runs.
in the second game, W&W Farms turned back Fuller’s 14-9.
Tristan Arrington had a big night for W&W Farms, scoring three runs. Darby Merritt and Emily McCracken scored two runs each. Suzanne Taylor and Shelby Tidwell scored two runs each for Fuller’s.
