Weather delays Moose Moss Invitational

— MOULTRIE — Divers generally have little trouble competing in the rain.
But when rain-associated problems arise as they did on Saturday to bedevil the second day of the annual Moose Moss Invitational, the divers have to wait like everyone else.
The rain that helped saturate the parched fields and lawns in Colquitt County also led to a truncated schedule at the Moose Moss Aquatic Center.
Six events were completed, but the girls 16-18 1-meter and boys 16-18 3-meter were not halfway through when a power outage shut down competition.
About the time power was restored, the lightning detector went off.
After nearly four hours of waiting, meet officials called off the rest of the day’s competition.
The two 16-18 events will be completed beginning at 9 this morning, followed by the 14-15 girls 3-meter and 14-15 boys 1-meter, which were postponed on Saturday.
Following those events, the previously scheduled Sunday events will be held.
The senior women 1-meter and senior men 3-meter events originally scheduled to be held Saturday afternoon were canceled.
Before Saturday’s power outage, the meet was progressing as scheduled, despite the wind-blown rain and temperatures considerably cooler than those on Friday.
Early on Saturday, Elizabeth Ann Kirkland had her second straight outstanding performance of the meet, taking the silver medal in the 12-13 girls 1-meter springboard event.
Kirkland was first in the 12-13 girls 3-meter competition on Friday, outscoring Atlanta Diving’s Lauren Hall.
Hall returned the favor on Saturday morning, scoring a 274.90 to win on the 1-meter board. Kirkland’s 225.05 took second place.
Kirkland was followed by Alexis Riley, unattached, 201.30; Ana McIntosh, North Florida Diving, 198.30; Nicolette Noble, unattached, 196.25; Sarah Dominick, Port City Diving, 190.00; Spencer Rossa, Patriot Dive club, 149.80; Eryn Greathouse, Atlanta Diving, 145.20.
Tevin Hightower of Moss Farms finished second among the three divers entered in the 12-13 boys 3-meter.
Jack Nyquist of Atlanta Diving was first with a 234.94.
Hightower had a 215.75. Robert Raley of Port City Diving was third with a 212.15.
Camille Kirkland took the bronze medal in the 11-and-under girls 1-meter event with a score of 150.25.
Gracia Leydon-Mahoney of Charles River Diving was first with a 213.00. She was followed by Lizzie Tillo of North Florida Diving, who had a 187.80.
Fourth place went to Sophie Davies of Charles River Diving with a 144.10. Jillian Dominick of Port City Diving was fifth with a 102.90.
Moss Farms diver Tristan Wells won the 3-meter novice event with a 97.00.
Knox Willoughby of Atlanta Diving, the only other entrant, had an 88.
In another novice event, Bethia Dawson of Moss Farms was first in the 12-13 girls 1-meter, scoring a 127.70.
Ariana Sabet of North Florida Diving was second with a 113.15.
They were the only two competitors in the event.
In the 10-11 girls 1-meter novice, Moss Farms diver Savannah Dean was second with an 82.00 and teammate Kaitlin Sweet was fifth with a 72.00 in the six-diver field.
Samantha Williams of Atlanta Diving was first with an 88.50.
Summer Sanders of Tennessee Diving with third, with an 80.00; Nicole Williams of Atlanta Diving was fourth with a 77.50; and Kati Luttrell of Tennessee Diving was sixth with a 65.50.
